Outlive your life - Max Lucado
God can use anyone, anytime, anywhere to do great things! One example of this is His disciples: they started out as lowly fishermen and God called them to be Fishers of men, proclaiming Him to the peoples! "God doesn't call the qualified. He qualifies the called." He doesn't just use ministers to preach to others, He uses average people. You don't only preach by standing in front of a group reading some notes about a scripture passage. As St. Francis of Assisi said "Preach the gospel always and if necessary, use words." Also, remember that He doesn't give us what we deserve (punishment/eternity in Hell) but that He sent His Son to die for us on the cross. That alone should make us want to tell everyone about Him!
Remember to that no one can do everything but together, everyone can do something. That's what makes a church, not 1 person preaching but everyone together worshipping and praying and ministering to each other. Show compassion to everyone, in church and out. Take time to remember who is control of it all - NOT US!!!
Don't just know people by name, really know each other intimately. Change begins with a genuine look, not just a quick glance, but really look at someone. Seeing the surface isn't always truthful - you might have to dig a bit to find out what's really troubling someone or what they need/desire.
"Imitate the disciples - devour God's word and get to know Him and talk to Him". The courage to stand for Christ comes from knowing Him and thinking/trusting on His words. If you face adversity, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING! CLING TO HIS PROMISES! What was one of the last things Jesus did before dying on the cross? He prayed and begged that if it was the will of His Father, the cup of death would be taken from Him. Jesus PRAYED and so should we!
At the end of the book is a discussion and action guide prepared by David Drury. Each chapter of the guide includes discussion questions and ideas for action to make a difference.

Same kind of different as me
Denver is a man who grew up virtually a slave in modern times. As a youngster, his family share-cropped for the Man. He soon tired of his life and decided to hop a train and find a better life for himself. What he found instead was life on the streets in Fort Worth, Tx. He was a hard man who others on the street feared/respected. Who knew he would make friends with a rich, white guy and his wife. And eventually he learned "you got to get the devil out the house 'fore you can clean it up!"
How do two men from opposite ends of the spectrum form a tight and long-lasting friendship? First and foremost, God! And a little prodding from Ron's wife, Debbie. Ron and Debbie served at a local mission to help the homeless and she told Ron that in a dream, God showed her a man who would make big changes and that the man was Denver Moore, a local homeless man who visited the mission. She encouraged Ron to get to know him and over time, they slowly built a close friendship.
Throughout this book, you can see threads woven by God leading them to each other. The central theme of the book is to show God is in control of everything and nothing just happens, He has a plan for it all.
You'll have to read the book to really see what events unfolded and how they all led to one conclusion: pain and love.

You can be everything God wants you to be
Society tells us that we can be anything we want to be if we work hard enough but we can only truly be everything God wants us to be. Study yourself to find out what skills God gave you, those are like clues as to what you should be.
Romans 12: 3-8 Everyone has different skills and contributes to the whole - no one has the exact skills and capacity to do what you are best at.
Lucado uses an acronym to describe how to find out who you are/where you belong.
S strengths T topics O optimal conditions R relationships Y yes!
What are your strengths? What is your topic - your verbs, nouns, objects you enjoy working with. What are your optimal conditions - what motivates you? What sort of relationships do you have? When you can answer those questions, you get to the feeling of Yes! I know who I am and what God wants me to do!

Winston Churchill - John Perry
I started out critizing this book for it's many editorial errors but ended up finding it a good read. I still find the lack of good editing disturbing as there are many errors and missing words but it's a good book when you overlook them.
I had not read much on Churchill's early years, just his war years, and find it interesting to see how much of a leader and showman he was as a youngster. He was not a good student unless it was a subject that interested him, such as horse riding. He also loved attention and used his family's connections to keep himself at the center of action as much as possible. A quote from the book that demonstrates this is when Prime Minister Herbert Asquith remarked that Churchill "would make a drum out of the skin of his own mother in order to sound out his praises".
Throughout the book, we can see Churchill struggle with religious beliefs and how he viewed the hand of God in the events of his life. His nanny, Elizabeth Everest or Woomany, as he called her, was the driving force behind much of his religious beliefs. She was the one that took him and his brother to church as often as possible and taught them her views on religion. Her viewpoint (as discussed on pg. 9) was Low church and anti-Catholic. One example of his wrestling with what he really believed in - at the age of 21, he was pondering what rules man's life. Was it luck, fortune, individual decisions? He didn't see it as Christianity or any religion but he sensed something was there. (pg. 43) Another interesting comparison of Churchill's beliefs - on pg. 112 he's speaking of an accident that occured to him while in the US before WWII and says "Nature is merciful and does not try her children, man or beast, beyond their compass. It is only where the cruelty of man intervenes that hellish torments appear." That has some similarity to I Cor. 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." (ESV) This is an example of him knowing something is there but not quite sure what to call it, so he calls it nature but the Bible calls it God but you can see the similarity between the two statements. Overall, he was a very religious man in the English sense. He knew his Bible well and quoted it often but generally quotes a God that helps those who helps themselves (pg.135)
Throughout the book, no matter how much Churchill show-boated, you can see he's a leadership genius and was perfectly suited for the task as Prime Minister of England during WWII. There is more I could say about the book, but if I continue, I may as well write a book myself. :-) I'll end with his personal motto: KBO (keep buggering on).

From peanuts to pressbox - Thomas Nelson
As a young boy, he loved sports and as many boys did, would go to bed listening to a sports broadcast. By the time he was in high school, he had decided to become a sports broadcaster and started skipping school in order to educate himself on this career choice. He visited radio stations and listened to their announcers, he'd get as close as he could to the press box during games so that he could hear how it was done. Eventually, he got a job at The Garden selling peanuts and would spend more time watching games or the broadcasters then selling peanuts.
Throughout this book, Gold mentions various people who helped him out or who he met and remains friends with. Names such as Bob Costas, Marv Albert, Red Barber, Bob Wolff, Howard Cosell, John Brophy, Kenny Stabler, among many others. Knowing so many and so varied a group of people helped him when he hosted sports talk shows, he could interview a lot of well-known sports personalities.
Eli Gold is now best known as the voice of Alabama Crimson Tide - roll tide!

Max Lucado - Fearless (Thomas Nelson)
Why are you afraid, O ye of little faith? (Matthew 8:26) I enjoy this quote from the book - "It's not the absence of storms that sets us apart. It's whom we discover in the storm: an unstirred Christ".
Lucado has listed 8 worry stoppers: Pray first, Easy does it (slow down), Act on it, Compile a worry list (did they actually happen??), Evaluate your worry categories, Focus on today, Unleash a worry army, Let God be enough. These worry stoppers spell out what we should be instead of fearful - PEACEFUL! Jesus is the ultimate example of how to deal with fears. When he faced the cross, he was anxious. What did He do? He didn't run and hide...He prayed and asked if it were possible, remove this cup from me but not my will but thine. We should pray without ceasing!

It happened in Italy - Thomas Nelson books
The books starts off with Jimmy Gentry looking a photos of the camps. He is one of the American soldiers that liberated Dachau. "The first thing I notice about these people is that they're not wearing rags of striped clothes; the clothes these people are wearing are nice, like clothes the men wore back home in Franklin at the time. They're well dressed - jackets, ties. Not what I saw in Dachau, no ma'am. These people are fleshy, not like the walking dead I saw in Dachau. They look well-kept. Nothing like the ones I saw in Germany - with those eyes - people with haunting eyes." And thus starts the story of camps in Italy and the Italians who helped the Jews.
In Italy, most Italians believed Amare gli altri come te stesso - love thy neighbor as thyself. Most Italians hindered the Nazis in Italy and helped the Jews because they saw them as humans just like themselves. Appoxamately 75-80% of the Jewish population in Europe died but compare that to 75-80% of Jews living in Italy, survived the war.
This book documents the stories of 12 survivors but thru it, many more stories have surfaced (see www.elizabethbettina.com). Few people outside the remote areas of Italy where the camps were located, knew such camps existed. In these camps, the Jews were able to worship, have visits from family members who were in other places, wear their own clothes and not have to wear the star of David. The main requirements placed on them was to check in each day at the police station, not leave the village, they couldn't own land, couldn't officially work their profession (ie: doctor). An attempt was made to reunite families living in seperate camps - something unheard of in any German camp!
In 1943, Italy broke rank with Germany and joined the Allies and that is when the true problems for Jews in Italy began. The Jews in German occupied Northern and Central Italy were rounded up and deported to German camps - 1259 in Rome alone. However, the numbers could have been greater but the police who were given the orders to round them up, often ignored those orders, in turn warning the Jews to leave the area to avoid capture.
The stories of the survivors all have a theme in common: if it weren't for the Italians, I wouldn't be alive today! They expressed their gratitude for Italians constantly and many of them were able to return to Italy with Elizabeth to visit the places they once lived. Several were even able to meet with the Pope!
In the book, there are numerous photos of the survivors as they were then and as they are now as well as copies of some of their documentation that has survived the years. There is plenty more I could say but eventually, I would spoil the book for you so I will conclude.

Book Review – 100 Bible stories 100 Bible songs
This is my first book review for Thomas Nelson Books. I chose to review the kids book – 100 Bible stories 100 Bible songs. It is created by Stephen Elkins and illustrated by Tim O'Connor. The book is hard-cover but has a soft cover feel like a lot of kids books have. The book includes 2 cds that contain 100 songs and each song goes with a story in the book. The book is brightly colored and will catch the attention of any child. Each story (or Bible summary) is short and is good for short attention spans. Under the title of each story, is the title of the song that goes along with it so that you could listen to the song along with reading the story. It also gives the scripture reference that the story is from so that you can easily find it and read the whole story from the Bible. The book and songs are separated into Old and New Testament making it easy to pick which one you want to read/listen with your child.
The stories in the book are very simplistic and good for toddler age. I do, however, think they are too simplistic and tend to not complete a story/illustration fully. An example of this is in the story of Saul. The story goes on to say that "Jesus is the Son of God. People who believe this are called Christians." It says in James 2:19 – "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that and shudder." (NIV) Obviously, demons aren't Christians, so I think the simplistic nature of the book doesn't fully allow complete definitions/thoughts/ideas to be taught to a child. I think this is where the story's scripture references (and parental knowledge of the Bible) will come in handy in "Training up a child in the way that he should go."
If you want your child to learn about the 10 commandments, don't look to this book. It tells briefly how the commandments came about but it doesn't list the commandments at all. Again, the scripture reference comes in handy.
I didn't run across glaring inaccuracies in the book EXCEPT Moses. In the story about the promised land, it says that Moses went up to Mount Nebo and was happy as the Israelites entered the promised land. However, this is NOT biblically accurate. The scripture reference for this story is Deuteronomy 34 and in this chapter, it says Moses went up to Mount Nebo and died and God buried him there. In verse 8 it says, "The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days until the time of weeping and mourning was over." (NIV) If you continue reading into Joshua 1 verses 1 and 2 it says, "After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son on Nun, Moses' aide: Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them" (NIV)
I have just 1 more thing to point out. Don't expect that this book will mesh exactly with how you interpret scripture. Different denominations of churches interpret things in different ways. An example of this is baptism. Two statements made in the book are: "Baptism shows the world that we love Jesus" and "When I am baptized, God will be pleased". I won't get into a theological discussion on this except to say, I don't agree with those statements but no book will be able to cater to all beliefs.
Overall, this is a good introduction to the Bible for kids but don't let it be the only source for teaching your child about God. Make use of the scripture references listed and read the whole passage to your child.

Sadness
Secondly, we lost our coach. I can't believe that Croom threw in the towel so soon, we just had our first season off probation last year as well as his first real group of his players. Yeah, we've had a rough season but coaches can only do so much, its the players that miss plays or catches not the coaches. I hope they find a coach that's as good as he is about keeping things clean and encouraging more educational values and such. Go DAWGS!!!
What happened to LSU?? They got beat by Arkansas, the team we beat the previous week?? What's up with that??
Oh, how about ROLL TIDE! Bama remains #1 in the nation and undefeated! Next up for them is the SEC championship against Fla.

Hallelujah!!
What happened to LSU?? Those same rebels we face this week beat LSU 38-13 and this after LSU made a great comeback against Troy last week. I think the eye of the Tiger has closed for the year!
Will Alabama remain #1 after this coming week's game? Auburn has beat them the last 6 years but they aren't playing so well this year. Will they be able to pull an upset and knock off the #1 team in the nation? Time will tell soon...

2 weeks off

Whew! Two weeks goes by soooooo fast! I can hardly believe that I've got to go back to work on Monday. Week 1 was spent at the Breaks Interstate Park in Breaks, Va. This is up in the Appalachian Mountains and has some awesome views! I did a little hiking while there and got to see quite a few deer (or maybe the same ones over and over) - I did see my first buck while there! These animals weren't afraid of humans and didn't run away, even when a vehicle pulled up. The first time I went hiking (I went twice), a snake of unknown type crossed the trail in front of me - needless to say, I was busy standing still just in case or I would have taken a picture of it! Week 2 was spent in Birmingham, Al with my sister-in-law and 2 nieces. My brother was in Peru for 3 weeks and got back Tues. night. The girls have sure grown!
I can hardly wait - its now under a month till football season!! GO DAWGS GO!!!

Coach Croom at the Starkville Public Library

Coach Sylvester Croom, head football coach at Ms. State University, was the celebrity reader at the Starkville Public Library. He read 2 books to the kids - one book was about the Bulldogs, "Mad for Maroon" by Starkville native, Laurie Parker. The kids all enjoyed him and asked several good questions at the end. I enjoyed it as well!

Buenos tardes!

Hola! I'm back from the Mexican cruise (sadly) and had a pretty good time. I went with Karen and her 3 kids, a friend of her son's, and a friend of her daughter's (and her mother and friend). The only thing I can say bad was the boat was too small and you could really feel it movin! We ran into high winds and lots of waves on Sun and lots of people got sick, I got a little nauseous but never quit eating or had to take drugs. It rained a whole lot on the cruise but we had fun in spite of it! In Costa Maya, I went horseback riding at the Rancho Gallinolas. In Cozumel, we went around shopping and ate at Casa Denis. Go to youtube for some Mexican music. We were seranaded a couple of times while eating. I have my pictures up on flickr - just search tkdgirlms. All in all, it was a good time!

Smokin'

Well, we're not on fire here in Starkville, Ms but we do have a lot of smoke from the fires in Fla/Ga. Made the mistake of sitting outside at lunch today because it really didn't seem so bad but I was wrong! My lungs and throat have felt like they were on fire all afternoon - it doesn't help that I have asthma. I'll be driving down to Mobile tomorrow with friends to go on our cruise to Mexico, so I reckon we'll be driving into a lot of smoke down that way - glad I refilled my asthma medicine today! You can sorta see the smoke in this picture I took this afternoon.
My new niece or nephew could be here soon - they went to the hospital last night but it was a false alarm. Guess I won't be around for the birth of this one either - when my niece was born, I was at a meeting and had to come home early so I could drive over to Birmingham, Al to see her. Check out this short video clip of her - Picture dancing. When you get to youtube, I have a few other clips of her as well.
